Description Richard Ash 2009-10-30 14:36:55 UTC
GA: Fixable by user changing compatibility mode to Vista SP2 or XP SP3. Reports
where this error occurs say Audacity installs without compatibility, but that
isn't in itself a condition to reproduce it.

Demoting to P3 (nearly a month since I've seen any reports, only four in total this year). Would still be good to stop it happening if it doesn't create worse problems to do so, but (IMO) it couldn't now stop a stable release. I have some suspicion the problem was concentrated in the pre-release days of Windows 7 in RTM copies that Microsoft was distributing.

Closing this as "resolved-fixed". I have only seen one report of this since 1.3.12 release, where we distributed the 9.0.21022.8 versions of "msvcr90.dll" and "msvcp90.dll" which then matched with our customised "Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest". User confirmed he somehow still had the "9.0.30729.1" msvcr90 and msvcp90 dll's in the Audacity installation folder, and the problem stopped when he reinstalled so as to replace with the intended dll's.

There were two other (Win 7) reports, but turned out these were 1.3.10 or 1.3.11. Rather than tell them to change compatibility to Vista SP2 or XP SP3, I asked them to replace with the older "9.0.21022.8" dll's, so matching the manifest, and they said that stopped the error.

----

Two R6034 instances reported right after release of 1.3.13 (12 Apr 11). 1.3.13 has 9.0.30729.1 dll's and 9.0.21022.8 Manifest. Both reports on XP SP3. One report has no further details and there was no further response.

Other report was more detailed. It wasn't like some previous R6034 cases where you OK the error and nothing else happens. When this user OK'd the error, Audacity launched and the error message reappeared over the app. After several presses of "OK", the error went away and Audacity seemed to run OK. This was repeatable on launch. Replacing with the older "9.0.21022.8" dll's did not help.

This user said 1.3.12 has this problem but 1.3.11 does not. When user set compatibility mode for 1.3.13 to Windows 2000 and launched it, there was no R6034 error. When user turned off compatibility mode and launched 1.3.13 there was still no error. This could possibly be something to do with Windows flagging applications for previous crashes - see http://bugzilla.audacityteam.org/show_bug.cgi?id=11#c105.

Not known if other copies of msvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT manifest files were somewhere on either user's system.

The user who gave a more detailed report "Audacity launched and the error message reappeared over the app" says he has "many" other copies of msvcp90.dll, msvcr90.dll and Microsoft.VC90.CRT.manifest on the system.
