Jumbled screen while loading 2-hour project

Whenever I open a long (2 hour project) I get:

1) the top line next to the project name says "not responding"
2) The X at top right is redded out and inoperable
3) The bottom of the sreen shows jumbled graphics (see screenshot)

Furthermore there is no progress dialog to indicate that Audacity is actually doing something with an indication of how long it might take.

This could be very disconcerting and unsettling for the user.

This is not a new issue, I have experienced this on various Audacities from time immemorial and on three different PCs and XP, W7 and W10.

Bug #1319 "Excessive delays opening long projects on Windows (sometimes)" relates to this.

As does Bug #218 "Excessive delays fitting long projects to window, and progress dialog whited out after import or effect."

Peter, are these projects you are reopening already fitted to the screen when you last saved them? If so I am not clear about the distinction with bug 218.

I haven't kept accurate data on this - but since you ask the question I will do so going forward.

But from hazy memory it affects all long projects, not juts those that are screen-fitted.

This does not happen on my Macbook Pro macOS 10.12.3 Sierra.

I copied over a two-hour project from W10 (where it does exhibit this scrappy-looking behaviour and takes a fair time to load) to the Macbook.

I copied it on USB stick and copied that to the Macbook's SSD, On opening this project from an already launched Audacity it opened almost instantaneously.

A progess dialog would be helpful to the user to reassure them that things are happening.

This appears to be a duplicate of P2 Bug #218
