Steps To Reproduce:
Make many tracks. Observe effects of Click, Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click in the track control panel, away from other controls. Click leaves just one track selected, as expected. Ctrl+Click is no different from Click. Shift+Click inverts the selection on a track. But to follow conventional behavior in other programs: Ctrl+Click should invert selection. Shift+Click should select a range of tracks. Try the same in Mixer Board, where you can change the set of selected tracks with picks on the Audacity icon. That ought to behave likewise.

Description Paul L 2016-06-26 10:34:43 UTC
Make many tracks. Observe effects of Click, Shift+Click, Ctrl+Click in the track control panel, away from other controls.

Click leaves just one track selected, as expected.
Ctrl+Click is no different from Click.
Shift+Click inverts the selection on a track.

But to follow conventional behavior in other programs:

Ctrl+Click should invert selection.
Shift+Click should select a range of tracks.

Now that ctrl+click in the waveform does not start scrubbing, should it also behave as ctrl+click in the control panel?

Updated Steps to Reproduce, to mention the mixer board.

I verified the behaviour is the same on all platforms, AFAICT.

Yes please Paul otherwise I won't want to accept this fix or the behaviour in the bug 320 fix where you now can't select in track 1 then mouse select in track 3 without also selecting in track 2.

The change in what SHIFT does is this bug and 320 may be unexpected for users unless they realise that we are now following file system/list paradigm.

Do you see a way to append new Status Bar messages to "Drag the track vertically to change the order of the tracks" when you hover over the track? Likewise could we append new Status Bar messages to "Click and drag to select audio" when we hover in a track that does not contain the cursor or selection?

I feel it very important to mention in these messages what CTRL-click (COMMAND-click on Mac) does, and ideally mention SHIFT-click too.

Accepting this fix (it was an Enh, not a bug I believe). Peter and I appreciate the improvement.

Request to repurpose CTRL-click in waveform to toggle the selection, and improve Status Bar messages for Track Control Panel, is at bug 1484.
