Tooltips for buttons with no assigned shortcut should just display the button name
Last modified: 2018-08-20 11:45:48 UTC
Toltips for buttons with no assigned shortcut should simply display the button name. In 2.1.2 and earlier we displayed an empty double Bracket "... ()" for the hovertext tooltip for buttons without shortcuts. For example: "Play ()" - this was pretty meaningless and confusing. In the latest 2.1.3 alphas this has been replaced with "... (no key)" - which after much QA amd RM discussion was felt to be insufficiently clear and informative. QA discussion floated several ideas expanding the tooltip to say for example: "... (no shortcut assigned)". But in the end it was decided that it would be better that: IF there were no assigned shortcut THEN we would just display the button name by itself, for example: "Play" Not only is this clear and simple it is also totally consistent with what we do in menus when there is no assigned shotcut and indeed what we do in Keyboard Preferences when there is no assigned shortcut. And remember, consistency is one of our guiding principles in Audacity.

Tested on Mac El Capitan rfd2c65d 03Aug16 Looks to be good here. 1) All buttons with no default assigned show just the button name. 2) Also tested removing a shortcut from buttons that have a default assigned shortcut. After removal these show up as just the button name. Still to be tested on W10 - waiting for the latest nightly
Tests OK on Linux.
Also tested on Mac the shortcuts or their lack of them also show up properly in the Dtats Bar messages - they do.
Tests ok on W10 audacity-win-rb27504e-2.1.3-alpha-04-aug-16 Same tests as in comment 2 on Mac on on comment 4 re the "Status Bar" showing the corrct shorcuts or lack of.
Thanks, Steve. I tested adding and removing shortcuts on Scrub Toolbar on Ubuntu 14.04 which worked fine.
