Bugzilla – Bug 1557
Win/Linux: Shortcuts for select/deselect all do not work in Mixer Board
Last modified: 2018-08-20 11:51:47 UTC
The shortcuts for Select All (CTRL+A) and Deselct All (CTRL+SHIFT+A) do not work in Mixer Board. This is inconsistent with the behaviors in the main Audacity Window especially since in Mixer Board we do have the consistency of the multi-track selection (based on file selection in file manager paradigm).
The problem is exacerbated when you have many tracks and several of them selected. The user needs to ba able to quickly and readily ascertain which of his/her tracks are slected - and the current visual cue makes this very tricky.

(In reply to Peter Sampson from comment #1) This comment actuallu applies to Bug #252 (I just copied it there - but can't delete it from here).
(In reply to Peter Sampson from comment #0) Peter, I can't reproduce this on Windows 10 at all. Please test again, clicking on the Audacity logo in Mixer Board to be sure you have an easy target to hit. If you see a problem, please add the steps to reproduce it.
(In reply to Gale Andrews from comment #4) Gale, I'm not talking about selection/deselection by clicking in the Mixer Board tracks - I know how to do that and it works fine on both W10 nand macOS Sierra, Rather what I am talking about are the normal (and ubiquitous in many other apps) shortcuts for Select All (Ctrl+A) and Deselect All (Ctrl+Shift+A). Steps to reproduce: 1) create three audio tracks 2) make no slections 3) View Mixer Board 4) Nothing is shown as selected 5) Type Ctrl+A 6) Nothing happens, nothing is selected
(In reply to Peter Sampson from comment #5) > 1) create three audio tracks > 2) make no slections > 3) View Mixer Board > 4) Nothing is shown as selected > 5) Type Ctrl+A > 6) Nothing happens, nothing is selected Works fine for me on Windows 10. Irrespective of which window has focus when I CTRL + A, all tracks become selected in both main window and Mixer Board (or all become deselected if I use CTRL + SHIFT + A). To make sure the window has focus, open Settings app, Personalisation > Colours and turn on "Show colour on title bar". Otherwise with white for focused and unfocused title bar, it can be hard to tell. Can't think of any other explanation it does not work for you.
It seems to work fine without let or hindt=rance (with latest alphas) on both my Macbook Pro Sierra and mt XP desktop. However with W10 what I get is 1) Create say 4 mono tracks 2) View > Mixer Board 3) Forcus is on Mixer board (title bar text is bold) 4) Ctrl+A selects all tracks in Mier Board (and in Main Window) 5) Ctrl+Shift+A deselects all tracks in Mier Board (and in Main Window) 6) 4 & 5 can be recycled endlessly with no problems 7) Now Click on one of the Audacity logo icons in the Mixer board to select one of the tracks 8) Now neither Ctrl+A or Ctrl+Shift+A work => Windows "boing" noise
(In reply to Peter Sampson from comment #7) Thanks, Peter. I can confirm your finding on Windows 10, and the shortcuts do not work at all in Mixer Board on Ubuntu 14.04. I added Steps to Reproduce.

(In reply to James Crook from comment #9) Testing on W10 with audacity-2.3.0-alpha-12-71f49ae0f63578abc3a9cfc6f270a0393471d1ac Now works properly on W10 - but note that you need to turn on the Full set of shortcuts - otherwise there is no Ctrl+Shift+A for Select None
(In reply to Peter Sampson from comment #10) Works for me (Ubuntu 64-bit). (And as for Windows, "Ctrl + Shift + A" is not a default shortcut, but works if full set is enabled)
