Report from feedback@

I’m Beta testing 2.2.0, and I’ve hit upon a bug that I can reproduce consistently.

I am running OSX High Sierra (10.13) on a reconditioned iMac 21.5-inch, Mid 2011 (with 2.8 GHz Intel Core i7 and Memory of 24 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 if that’s even relevant) ,
and Audacity 2.2 runs very well on it.

1) However, if I already have an Audacity project open, and attempt to open a second .AUP from within the Finder window (whether by double clicking, right-clicking for Open on the pop-up menu, or typing Cmd-O), the second file attempts to open in a new instance of Audacity, visible in Apple’s Dock bar at the bottom of the screen.

Since Apple’s standard is to open all project “windows” within the same instance of a single Application, this second instance of a running App is surprising.
Worse, it is inaccessible — I can’t click on it or Cmd-tab through to it (the second Audacity instance is, predictably, not listed when you use Cmd-tab to switch).

Likely, it has simply hung since it continues to bounce (signifying that it is loading) for ages
	- and, even when the bouncing finishes, I cannot switch to it by clicking on its icon in the Dock
	- whilst in the Dock, its icon offers only the "Force Quit” option

Lastly, when this “ghost” application has been opened with a relatively large Audacity file, it is very resistant to Apple’s Force-Quit function.
	- this is true whether I click on the Application's pop-up menu in the Dock, or summon the “Force Quit Applications” window with Cmd-Alt-Esc as below
	- On Shut Down, my Mac will quit out of the first (accessible) Audacity instance automatically.
	- however, it then declares that it can’t Shut Down or Restart, 'because the application “Audacity” failed to quit.'

If I repeat the cycle multiple times (perhaps up to ten times: Force Quit; Shut Down; Cmd-Alt-Esc, Force Quit; Shut Down; right-click on Dock item to Force Quit; Shut Down... ), my Mac will eventually accept that Audacity has quit, and will reboot safely.

As I say, I suspect this problem is created by unorthodox Finder behaviour — attempting to open a second instance of a running application, instead of including the project among the windows of an already open application.

2 a) In line with this, I have found that two open projects are not always visible even when within the running Audacity application
   b)	Ideally, in any running Mac application, at the bottom of the Windows menu there should be a list of all open projects
	- I can work around this, by using the Window menu’s “Bring all Windows to the Front” option
	- and I have also discovered that, by expanding Audacity’s window with the Zoom function, I get to choose between other windows’ Tabs — handy.

So far, these are the only problems I’ve had with the Beta version. It is very stable, and a pleasure to work with.

Especially with regard to the graver bug (1), please don’t hesitate to contact me if you have any questions.

I confirm that this also happens on the newly released 2.2.0,

Testing on 2.1.3 shows tbat this is a regression on 2.1.3 where step 2 opens a second project in the original instance of Audacity.
Comment 2 Peter Sampson 2017-11-02 12:40:04 UTC
For me with a four hour project as the second one I see no such reluctance to force quit (but that is a superfast SSD Macbook Pro)
Comment 3 Peter Sampson 2017-11-02 13:32:54 UTC
Also happens on Mac if you double click on an aop file on the desktop.

Does not occur on Windows Home
Comment 4 Bill Wharrie 2017-11-02 14:33:28 UTC
I cannot reproduce this on El Capitan 10.11.4.
Comment 6 Cliff Scott 2017-11-06 22:20:08 UTC
Tested on MacOS 10.12.6 and 10.13.1 and can verify it works as advertised. Opening a second window from Finder opens a new Audacity window in the current instance of Audacity.
Comment 7 Cliff Scott 2017-11-06 22:23:12 UTC
Opps, forgot to say this was tested on a build, built this evening, Nov. 6, 2017, from Master.
Comment 8 Paul L 2017-11-06 23:29:27 UTC
Cliff, please confirm that it is fixed even if you put the application into /Applications.

My experience was, the bug reproduced for 2.2.0, only wne the application bundle was there.
Comment 9 Peter Sampson 2017-11-07 05:38:38 UTC
Testing on macOS 10.13 High Sierra with macos-nightly-2.2.1-26a6815.dmg installed in the Applications folder.

1) with my privileged admin account now when I right click on the second aup file to open it with "Open With", it now opens as second window in the same instance of Audacity in the task/bar.

2) testing with my standard Test account and with my non-privileged guest account.
With both of these I cannot right click to get the dropdown menu - but a double right click (or double left click) launches the project in 2.2.1 alpha. Double clicking on the second aup launches that as a second window in the existing instance of Audacity - no duplication of instances in the Task bar

I assume the lack of right-click menu to be down to (lack of) privileges for these two accounts (but I am no Mac expert).

This looks to be fixed,

But I shall wait to hear from Cliff re. Paul's question in Comment #8 before marking this as RESOLVED QUICKFIXED

I don't know if Steve is running High Sierra - but if he is, perhaps he could test this too.
Comment 10 Cliff Scott 2017-11-07 08:02:02 UTC
Yes, Paul. This testing was done with Audacity in /Applications.
Comment 11 Peter Sampson 2017-11-07 08:05:50 UTC
Steve cannot test as he is on Low Sierra - so on the basis of my and Cliff's testing I will mark this bug RESOLVED FIXED (it's a 2.2.0 bug)
