This may be dependent on the display dpi.
On my machine (1920 x 1080) the issue is 100% repeatable.

../../src/prefs/PrefsDialog.cpp(340): assert "sz.x <= 1000 && sz.y <= 750" failed in PrefsDialog(): Preferences dialog exceeds max size

I trust Steve's fix - I'm sure he tested before committing the fix - accordingly I am going to close this bug
