Bugzilla – Bug 343
Enh: Contrast / Plot Spectrum export enhancements
Last modified: 2018-08-20 11:46:01 UTC
Tested on Ubuntu 10.10 with Audacity 1.3.13 rc1 Export a file from the Plot Spectrum window to the desktop. Change the selection and Replot (or do anything else that will produce a noticeably different output) Export to the Desktop with the same file name as the first exported file. The new file is not written.
(In reply to comment #0) Confirmed on Mac with 1.3.13-beta. There is no overwrite warning and the file is not overwritten.
Certainly the file is being written for me on Win 7 and Ubuntu, but the new data is being appended. I seem to recall this is intentional but have not checked the code. There is an oddity that on Ubuntu the export text file selection window always defaults to the HOME directory, so if you chose Desktop and re-exported, you may not have noticed that the directory had changed back to HOME. On Windows. the export text directory is the same as the Export/Save directory. So can you both recheck?
(In reply to comment #2) New Project Generate chirp 110 to 13200 Hz Select 0 - 10 seconds Plot Spectrum Export ... to file "01spectrum.txt" Open text file, copy and paste to new file for comparison, close original file Back in Audacity, select 15 - 25 seconds, Plot Spectrum Export ... default directory is same as first export Use file name "01spectrum.txt" - no overwrite warning Open text file and compare to previous version - new data is appended You can be fooled by looking at just the top of the file. I will document this.
OK, bug invalid as stated "Plot Spectrum Export does not overwrite previous file". We have the same issue with Contrast export appending data. It was felt that an overwrite warning would be irksome if you used export a lot (even though the file *is* technically overwritten). I still don't think this behaviour is expected and anybody who does not RTFM could think there has been no subsequent export. I also think in a new session you probably *don't* want to append new data to an old file. So I suggest these enhancements: * For both Plot Spectrum and Contrast, a checkbox "Append exported data to previous file". Maybe "Apppend exports" would do. If not checked, there is an overwrite warning. * For Plot Spectrum (when appending), timestamp each entry and insert space after old entry as we do in Contrast. Bug title changed to "Contrast / Plot Spectrum export enhancements". I created a new bug 387 "Text export for Contrast and Plot Spectrum does not supply extension if omitted". Applies to Windows but not Linux. Can someone check Mac and comment there?
