Steps To Reproduce:
1 New project, turn audio cache in the Directories Preferences off. 2 Import stereo file (say, 3 minute length) and Edit > Duplicate until you have 64 stereo tracks. 3 Solo some tracks, adjust their gain downwards if needs be and press Play button. 4 There will probably be 10 seconds or more delay before playback starts (more likely to be seen on Windows). Meters will not show playback until a few seconds after audio starts but don't seem to be behind the audio. 5 Press Stop. Audio ceases but meters continue showing a static image from the time playback ceased (or occasionally from a time just after playback ceased) for up to 10 seconds after audio stops.

Description Gale Andrews 2011-06-10 23:21:01 UTC
Split from bug 182. Tested on Win 7 x64 and Ubuntu 10.10.

Symptoms can also be seen with 128 mono tracks.

testing on W10 with audacity-2.3.0-alpha-83 on my hi-spec SSD laptop

With 64 tracks
a) the delay after pressing the Pause button is just less than 3 seconds (which for 64 tracks I think is pretty reasonable). What's more it plays smoothly.

b) the playback meter activates immediately the playing starts

I think this is closable as NOT-A-BUG
