Steps To Reproduce:
1 Ensure audio to buffer is 100 ms, generate 15s tone. 2 Scroll-scrub to the start of the track, continuing to hold the mouse control (currently middle button) down. Playback stops, continue to hold the mouse down. 3 Drag the mouse rightwards slowly without changing the speed, until the green speed indicator is slightly positive (+0.10 or similar). Observe the playhead does not move. 4 Continue to drag right very slowly until indicator reaches +0.50 or +0.60. The playhead will now start to move, but there is no audible playback for a few seconds. 5 Release the mouse, repeat steps 2 and 3, then advance the speed control to +0.50 or higher until the playhead moves. Again there is no playback for the first few seconds after the playhead moves.

Description Gale Andrews 2015-05-03 08:00:42 UTC
Same on Mac, except that (crackly) playback starts as soon as the playhead moves.

 2.1.1 20May15 rd7ffab7 new UI tested on W7-HP 64-bit.

With a double-click scrub when the playback reaches zero it just sticks there and can't be restarted by moving the mouse rightwards. Actually it doesn't quite get to zero it stops just before it.

With a double-click scrub when the playback reaches the end of the track it gradually slows right down as it reaches the end (almost the end, it stops just short). But backwards playback can be initiated with a leftwards movement of the mouse.

REOPENED. Clearly not fixed, unfortunately, just casually testing on Win 7 64-bit and Ubuntu 14.04 32-bit. It's actually much worse than before. Once the playhead reaches zero, or stalls just after zero on its way back there, I need about 20 x speed and the mouse out of the app to right to restart playback.

A better fix, for double click and shift scrubbing too: https://github.com/audacity/audacity/commit/4ba7a82ec928af9137cf9e0f5e05e8c0c43a2d58

Resolve now?
Comment 8 Peter Sampson 2016-04-19 09:52:27 UTC
Playhead moves correctly on the Macbook Pro El Capitan - and on my W10 laptop
Comment 9 Gale Andrews 2017-01-21 20:39:29 UTC
Yes this is impressively responsive now, using the new "Pinned Head" method of scroll-scrubbing. I tried it at the end of the track too. It's good to see it so responsive on my slow Ubuntu 14.04 netbook using pulse. Thanks Paul.
